Exactly 30 anniversary after the original Toy Story movie was released, establishing the animation giant as a major film company and introducing viewers to iconic figures like Woody (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (the voice talent), who are now famous worldwide.

Coming in 2026, the fifth installment is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed recently, offering a glimpse into the storyline but keeping viewers curious how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Frightens the Gang

The preview shows the young girl — who inherited the toy collection when he grew up — receiving a brand new plaything, one that alarms the familiar toy group. She gets her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.

Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like the rest of her playthings. Still, the toys seem to view it as a danger coming to replace them, which it likely will.

Woody's Return: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

An element the trailer doesn't touch on is why Woody is returned with his friends in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 depicted him embark on a new adventure with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), journeying with a carnival and assisting giveaway items locate loving owners.

Certainly, the filmmakers will address the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him show up in the familiar setting without warning is somewhat puzzling, though. It also raises questions whether his partner will have come back with him. And where is Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?

Connections from the Previous Film

Fortunately, some aspects are carrying over from the prior film. The final act the cowboy did before departing for his new life was hand over his sheriff badge to Jessie (Joan Cusack), leaving her in charge of the toy domain. The clip shows the badge attached to her outfit.

It is hoped she is still the key figure among the toys.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
